TOLEDO. La primera fuente escrita en donde aparece Toletum es en la obra del historiador romano Tito Livio, según el cual Toletum se originaría en Tollitum, que daría Tollitu, Tollito, Tolleto, Tolledo hasta quedar en Toledo. Su significado sería "levantado, en alto". Martín Gallego recoge la versión de "las vueltas dobles o recodos que forma el río que la ciñe". El escritor del siglo XII, Abú Ab-Dín al-Ayubí, afirma que طليطلة Tulaytulah significa "la alegre", sin dar más explicación. Los diferentes nombres históricos recibidos por la ciudad fueron: en latín Toletum; en árabe, طليطلة Tulaytulah; en judeoespañol, טולדות Toldoth; y en mozárabe, Tolétho. Según el profesor G. Tejada Álamo, "Tol(l)itum" sería un diminutivo de la palabra latina "tol(l)ium-(-ius)" derivada de "tolus"-("tolos" en griego) = cerro o colina, aunque también se puede referir al meandro o al torno, "redonda o circular"; derivada de la raiz indoeuropea "tol(l)" = "redondo o circular".
